Mentally, I’m already in summer which means I’m already focused on the shoes I’ll be wearing the most in the coming months. And those are? Maroon sandals.

I’m not surprised that the scarlet shoes have caught my eye—what’s stood out the most among shoe trends in 2024 is color. We’re in for a vacation season in which the usual neutral tones like white and black are dropped in favor of more striking colors like baby blue and, yes, maroon.

Maroon sandals have appeared in multiple forms on the catwalk, from the flat strappy sandals at Hermès to the low heels of Lemaire. Victoria Beckham opted for burgundy sandals with a bit of a platform that she paired with socks. In fact, that seems to be the styling trick favored among the fashion elite: All collections paired the maroon sandals with monochromatic looks.

While they’re on trend for summer 2024, I think we’ll be seeing maroon sandals for many seasons to come. For one, they can be just as versatile as black sandals. Plus, they add an even more interesting touch to any outfit. The color also moves well from summer to fall, making them a good transitional item to have in your closet.

Pair them with wide jeans and a dark T-shirt, or a white lace dress with a handbag to match. You can also have fun with the color palette by adding shades that contrast nicely with red, like aquamarine or mint green. The shade also instantly elevates any style of sandal, from flip-flop heels to chunky flats.

Designs with medium height or wide heels are the most common options when it comes to finding maroon sandals in stores. But whether you combine them with jeans or a black dress, with black tights or matching socks, they will be the solution to many outfits in 2024.
