Jordan Weisman, the creator of gaming franchises Battletech and Shadowrun, today launched the Kickstarter for his next work: A CRPG called Sea of Legends, based on the board game of the same name. Sea of Legends (the video game) is a deck-building isometric RPG featuring a fantasy-nautical atmosphere. Weisman and his team at Endless Adventures plan to launch the game on PC and Mac via Steam and itch.io.
Sea of Legends features card-based gameplay, with characters building up decks of actions for situations such as boarding, tavern brawls and ship-to-ship combat. Players can align themselves with multiple factions — including spooky, supernatural beings — while partaking of piratey activities such as plundering and smuggling. They can also get to know and romance various NPCs found throughout the game. According to the developers, one tier of Kickstarter backer will even be able to help build a major NPC in the game.
The Kickstarter page reads: “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned from our history of creating successful Kickstarter projects at Harebrained Schemes and channeled it into a tiered development plan that expands as funding grows. The goal of this approach is to ensure that, regardless of the funding level we reach, we will deliver a complete game. The development timeframe will range from 12 to 18 months, depending on the scope of the game as determined by funding.”
Weisman is one of many game creators who have turned to Kickstarter to supplement funding for their title. Weisman’s own studio, Harebrained Schemes, launched several Kickstarter campaigns for Shadowrun titles. Other major Kickstarter-funded games include the Divinity: Original Sin titles from Larian Studios, Shenmue III from Ys Net, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night by Castlevania’s Koji Igarashi and Frontier Development’s Elite Dangerous.
