Here’s to the Heroes Amid the Southern California Fires

Seemingly overnight, Hollywood went from celebrating the Golden Globes to panic as wildfires spread through the hills. By the time the Globes winners woke up on January 7, the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of west Los Angeles was on fire, and as the Eaton fire in Pasadena grew the following day, the two blazes, bolstered by the Santa Ana winds, turned the town scared and smoky, and claimed two lives.

Amid the confusion and devastation, simple acts of kindness emerged, as they often do. Of course, the hard-working men and women of the fire department are doing their jobs diligently and courageously. Seth McFarlane’s post, while not particularly effective in combating a natural disaster, sums everyone’s feelings up nicely.

On a personal note—as a Los Angeles resident—when I swipe through Instagram Stories right now, almost everyone who isn’t in an evacuation zone is offering their couch to any friend who is. Hardly an institutional solve, but the number of examples of everyday citizens pitching in are overwhelming.
