Character.AI lets users voice chat with AI characters

Character.AI has officially launched its new Character Calls feature, allowing users to have immersive voice conversations with AI-powered Characters. Like Character.AI’s text-based Characters, users can emulate real people or fictional characters using over 1 million community-created voices for a customized and tailored experience.

Moreover, Characters can speak with different pitches, tones, accents and even languages to suit a variety of use cases. Supported languages include English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and more.

“With Character Calls, your Characters are leveling up to become your ultimate sidekick, entertainer, and guide! Whether it’s polishing your language skills, acing interviews, adding zest to RPGs, or crafting epic storylines, Characters are ready to answer your call to amplify the fun and help you do whatever it is you want to do,” said Character.AI’s announcement.

Moreover, Characters can respond and engage dynamically simulating the flow of a natural conversation. Instead of a back and forth conversation over text, users can interrupt Characters with the tap of a button. Additionally, users can switch between text and voice chats mid-conversation.

Character.AI expansion into voice calls and its expansive voice library represent a major step forward for the company’s strategy of building a multimodal interface. As an encouraging sign for this thesis, over 3 million unique users have made 20 million Character Calls.

Notably, OpenAI delayed the upcoming ChatGPT Voice Mode for at least one month earlier this week over content moderation concerns.

Users can try Character.AI’s Character Calls today for free on the company’s app.
