Before she was a mom, director and UN-addresser, Angelina Jolie was a bombshell. She built her acting career off her talent, but it got quite a bit of boost from her looks, pretty much defining ’90s sexy. Gwyneth Paltrow was Hollywood’s angelic good girl, Jolie its dark feminine temptress. And it looks like Lara Croft Ang is back. Good to see you again!
Jolie tapped into her Mr. & Mrs. Smith side for a new Tom Ford Beauty ad, preening in a bold red lip and black lingerie. In the thirty-second spot, she studies a script, considers herself in the mirror and poses in front of a projection of her own face. You could say the theme of the ad is “Angelina Jolie is so gorgeous.”
She plays “a character that loves the camera almost as much as it loves her,” in the spot, which is described as “a portrait of a woman who makes everything in her gaze her own, drawing confidence from the power of her signature shade: 16 Scarlet Rouge,” according to a press release from the brand. The ad is a “cinematic homage to feminine beauty and its power.”
Maybe Jolie was drawn to the classic Old Hollywood vibe because she’s not such a fan of modern-day celebrity. “I wouldn’t be an actress today,” the Oscar-winner said in an interview last year. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Despite that she “grew up around Hollywood,” she’s never sought fame for fame’s sake. “I never bought into it as significant or important,” she said, adding, “I grew up in quite a shallow place…Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.” And also, good lipstick.
