Ripple [XRP] could flip Ethereum [ETH] in market cap by 2025, according to market watcher Ben Armstrong, popularly known as BitBoy Crypto.
BitBoy Crypto cited 2018’s XRP remarkable performance, which saw it rank 2nd on CoinMarketCap, while ETH came in third in market size.
“XRP had already flipped ETH before. On January 8 2018, it was the last altcoin season push, just two weeks after BTC topped.”
At that time, XRP’s market size was $130 billion, while ETH’s was $111 billion. BitBoy projected a similar play in 2025, as the overall market expects the current BTC cycle to top in 2025.
“In 2018, $XRP already flipped Ethereum once. And in 2025, it’s going to happen again. Get ready for the next bull run. $XRP Army knows what’s coming.”
Can XRP flip ETH?
According to Armstrong, ETH could struggle to overcome the psychological resistance of a $1 trillion market size due to competition in the layer 1 space.
According to his analysis, ETH might 3x and falter around $940 billion.
On the contrary, BitBoy projected that XRP could expand 20x from current levels, hitting a market cap of $600 billion. This could bring the price to $11. He said,
“A 20x could bring XRP price to $11. All it takes for XRP ETH flipping at this point is ETH to top before XRP and be on the way down as XRP rises to the top.”
He reiterated that the flipping could happen if XRP does a 25x-30x. That would translate to an XRP rally to $13 — $15.6 from the current $0.52 value.
However, he mentioned that the Ripple Labs lawsuit was a key roadblock to the XRP price rally. In fact, he estimated that XRP could have flipped ETH in 2021 if not for the lawsuit.
The price chart for the XRP/ETH ratio, which tracks XRP’s relative performance to ETH, echoed his sentiment to some extent. ETH outperformed XRP in early 2024 as the lawsuit dragged on.
However, a partial victory against the SEC towards H2 2024 tipped the scales for XRP to temporarily outperform ETH.
It rallied 86% against ETH between May and August, marking a significant outperformance against the largest altcoin. Whether the rally will continue towards the next target at 0.0003 remains to be seen.
That said, XRP sank towards $0.50 at press time. Since the lawsuit was still in play, the altcoin could face headwinds in the short-term.
